Did you know that every flower has a designated meaning? Wisteria symbolizes immortality, Dahlias elegance. Two Artist Members have been pondering the meaning behind the sunflower. To Mark Farina and Erin Lee Gafill, sunflowers stand for honesty because they gravitate towards sunlight, embodying the idea of “shedding light on a matter.” Because of their hardiness and drought tolerance, they are also symbols of vitality and longevity.
Dedicated to using their talent to portray a wide array of subjects, Farina and Gafill come together in a Gallery Showcase titled “It’s All About the Sunflower.” Highlighting a potent element of beauty in our world today, they hone in on depicting sunflowers in the quiet placidity of still life bouquets, the broad expanse of natural landscapes, and on display at peaceful farmer’s markets. Capturing color, calmness, and universal compassion, this exhibition brings out all the noble qualities of this bright, beautiful flower.
“I paint to create the kind of world I want to live in. A world of beauty, of color, of renewal, of peace.” –Erin Lee Gafill
“The past few years have been filled with disturbing events; riots, war, and pandemics. It’s easy to become pessimistic abuot all that’s been going on. Throughout it all the sunflower turns toward the light, symbolizing optimism and hope.” –Mark Farina
