Irene Lagorio
American, 1921-1994

Illustrator, painter and cartoonist Irene Lagorio was the Monterey Herald’s art critic in the 1970s and 80s. She served as CAA Board president in 1972, and during her career had numerous one woman shows that ranged from the Galleria Pro-Padova in Padua, Italy to the Monterey Museum of Art. 

A former teacher in Oakland and Napa, she was also a guest lecturer with UC Berkeley, and educational curator at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. She earned her BA from UC Berkeley, and post graduate work at Columbia University in New York and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. 

Miss Lagorio published an illustrated book of poetry titled, “Art History’s Innovators” in 1992.
